Homemade Deodorant Update

Awhile back I wrote a post on making homemade deodorant. I thought it was time to do a little update on what I think of it. Hopefully you are not completely grossed out, but you might as well hear my whole review.

It has started to get hot here in Kansas and I have noticed that since having my third baby I am much stinkier then I used to be. In fact, I never really used deodorant. Gross I know, but I really think that after awhile the bodies pH adapts and not everyone needs it all the time.

Well I think my body is changing again and I need it. I seem to stink the most about an hour after I shower. Earlier this week I noticed the smell and decided to rewash my underarms (still stiny) and try some of the homemade deodorant that I had made for my husband. I could not believe it. The smell was gone almost as soon as I put it on! What was even better is it did not come back.

So I would have to say that this recipe is a winner. I originally found it on Passionate Homemaking and have been passing it around to friends ever since.

5-6 Tablespoons coconut oil
1/4 cup arrowroot flour (or cornstarch)
1/4 cup baking soda

Mix everything together in a bowl. You may have to warm the oil a bit to get everything to mix. It will become solid again as it cools. You can then either leave the mixture in a bowl and apply with your fingers or place it in an empty deodorant container and apply that way.

  1. Does it also work as an anti-persperant? Sometimes I think the ugly wet stains are as bad as the stink.

  2. In my opinion anti-persperants are not natural. I feel that God gave us sweat glands to help flush out toxins. When we try to stop them we are allowing our bodies to build up these toxins instead of getting rid of them.
That said I have never heard my husband complain about nasty sweat stains since using this recipe. I would bet that the arrowroot helps to absorb some of the moisture.
I would urge you to try it and see what you think. What have you got to lose? :)

  3. I've always been scared of natural deodorants. I sweat a lot so that's a big concern of mine.

I agree it's not natural to hold it in but I don't want to walk around with stains either.

I'll bookmark this for when I build up enough courage.

  4. I tried using different recipes, all with baking soda, but the baking soda gave me a terrible rash. I finally tried milk of magnesia and it's been working very well. It's no coconut oil but I figure that it's got to be better than the Mitchum I had been using. lol. I really enjoy this blog, btw. Thanks!

  5. I wanted to let you know that the baking soda is an all natural antiperspirant. Just as an FYI. Also, another use for coconut oil that I didn't see on your site that my husband and I have been using for years would be in the bedroom. I am very sensitive and coconut oil is perfect for someone with sensitivities. Your site is awesome. Thanks for your hard work and God Bless you!

  6. I was just wondering the other day about a natural deoderant recipe. I'll have to give this a try.
